Standing before you is a cliff. Below you is a 200 foot drop and imminent death. Thoughts rush. Adrenaline pumps. How close can I get without falling?
Inch by inch you get closer and closer. Little by little, fear vanishes, adrenaline grows, and rationality fades. You are getting closer and closer. You finally make it. You stand there proud, arrogantly boasting how close you got to the edge…..
The ground gives way. Your footing is gone. Falling. Falling. Falling. Crying. Regretting. Falling faster and faster. Soon you will impact. Your bones will break. Neck snap. As you are within a few feet you wonder about your kids, your wife, your ministry, the impact you could have had, if you had just stopped and walked away from the cliff.
Christians, heed the Lord’s warning, as He warns each of us like he warned Cain: “sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you.” (Genesis 4:7)
Friends, especially new believers, stay away from the cliff. Sin is tempting, desirable, and fun for a season, but Romans 6:23 says that the wages of sin is death. Nothing comes as a result of sin except for death. Death is your reward for living in sin, just as death is the reward for the one who gets too close to the edge. We must flee sin. We must flee death. We must saturate ourselves with the love of Jesus Christ. There and only there will we find true satisfaction and joy. Do you want to live your life in misery, between serving God and serving your flesh?? I know I have for too long tried to dabble with the miseries and fleeting enjoyment of seeing how close I can get back to the edge of the cliff.
But friends you might even think you can have a little bit of sin. But does one experience just a little death? No. Death claims the entire person. It takes control over every organ of the body. It shuts down the lungs and the brain. Death will claim all of you. Sin will claim all of you. Do not play around any longer with pornography done in secret, or sin behind closed doors. It is eating away at your body, soul, and mind.
You want to be an effective minister of the gospel of Christ? “you must rule over it.” (Genesis 4:7)
You must rule over sin, believer. You must not let yourself be entangled with false securities and false hopes that sin will fulfill you! You are a child of the living God! You have been adopted as His son or daughter, freed from the chains of sin that previously held you.
“Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.” (1 Peter 2:16)
Of all people, I am writing this to myself. For too long I have been entangled in the lies that I can get as “close to the edge as I want” without falling. I write this to a man who I have met who is living in sin at this very moment. I pray that you confess, repent, and turn back to the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the answer. Dabbling in sin is not. Run from sin to the cross of Christ.
It will be a struggle and a fight. It will feel as though you are getting punched in the face time and time again. The temptation may be constantly “crouching at your door” but learn to depend fully and rely on Christ Jesus. He is not only your Savior, but your Lord.
You cannot have your sin and God. Which will it be? For me, I determine to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. (1 Corinthians 2:2)
